So if you ever (God forbid) lose your rough draft, you won’t have to start over completely, because you have a detailed outline full of notes. You can print it out, and have backup copies. Put it at the beginning of your outline, above Chapter 1, so you will always have it handy. When you are done with your outline, you should be able to easily write a brief synopsis to describe what is going on in your story. These notes will be valuable to you as you write your first draft.
It’s a good idea to add any back story in your notes if you plan on mentioning it in your story later. I often add descriptive details about the setting, characters emotional journey, dialogue, romantic moments, or secrets to reveal later. Then when you go back and look it over, you can make notes on any changes, or characters to add. Leave this blank until your basic story outline is done.
You can revise, edit and change whatever you want, and you will still have a complete story. Then, when you get to the second draft, you don’t need as much structure because you know what you’ve already got to work with.
